Abstract

This chapter introduces the book by providing a brief background on what is known about the impact and determinants of innovation and the importance of policy and the institutional environment for fostering innovation. It also provides a summary of the key contributions of the various chapters, pointing out that these provide perspectives on three broad questions pertaining to innovation and entrepreneurship in developing countries: How does innovation impact on development? How, and under what conditions, do entrepreneurs in developing countries innovate? What can be done to support innovation by entrepreneurs in developing countries? © United Nations University-World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER), 2011.
