Empirical experience shows that human experts determine suitable hybrids to grow in four steps. A general expert system prototype is built on the same principle, using an agent-oriented approach. The knowledge base consists of several agents. Agents communicate using their own language and update their internal beliefs until a solution is reached. A general prototype is being used for the creation of an expert system prototype for the determination of optimal maize hybrids to grow. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.
